The Cordaneum offers you a complete immersion into the art of string instrument making, from selecting the model to applying the varnish. Through an educational presentation, you will discover each step of the violin-making process, exploring the traditional techniques and materials used by luthiers.
The permanent exhibition invites you to admire a vast collection of string instruments, from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Among them, you will find violins, violas, cellos, and double basses, as well as selected works by master luthier Gauthier Louppe, a true reference in the field.
(Tuesday to Friday only)
During your visit, you will also have the opportunity to access the workshop, where student luthiers work under the supervision of their master luthier. This is a unique chance to interact with them, ask any questions about lutherie, and observe the various stages of instrument-making in real time.
To complete your discovery of lutherie, the Cordaneum invites you to watch two exclusive videos on our large screen:
A Mini Cello Concert
Performed on instruments crafted by Gauthier Louppe, this concert allows you to experience the richness and depth of the sound produced by the master luthier’s creations.
The Birth of a Baroque Lute (Video without audio commentary)
Created by one of our students, this short film takes you through the entire process of crafting a Baroque Lute, from the first chisel stroke to the final instrument. A captivating, purely visual journey, where every movement of the luthier unveils the art and precision of the craft.
(Free for children aged 0 to 6 years)
For groups of more than 15 people, a second guide is recommended. The guided tour of the exhibition is available by reservation, to be made at least two weeks in advance.
Admission is free for accompanying persons. Activities from our game booklet may be offered, as well as a practical discovery of the cello and the use of a noisette plane.
Plan enough time to fully enjoy your visit! Individual visit: On average 1h30 to explore the exhibition and the workshop. Guided or school visit: More in-depth and interactive, it can last up to 2 hours.
